National Health Policy 2017 aims to provide universal health coverage, quality healthcare at affordable cost
New Delhi: The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday approved the National Health Policy, 2017 (NHP 2017), which aims to provide universal health coverage and deliver quality healthcare services at affordable cost to all the people of the country.
Does government need to change its role from provider to facilitator when it comes to healthcare delivery in India?
For a long time now, there has been intense debate in India about the extent of role the government should play in providing essential services to citizens. The right wing economists have long argued for the government to withdraw from services, and consolidate its position as provider of infrastructure and facilitator. On the other hand, the left wing economists have maintained that in a country where more than half of the population lives in poverty, government cannot abdicate its role of providing essential services such as healthcare and education.
New Delhi: Union Health Minister J P Nadda on Thursday said there was a need to set up a special task force comprising both government and private healthcare sectors to ensure quality healthcare for every citizen of India.
In India for delivery of universal healthcare the new government intends to use insurance in a big way. It is assumed that the government will use existent private sector healthcare establishments to fulfil its goals through insurance.
Universal healthcare guaranteed by the State is generally dismissed as a Utopian dream by most in the United Sates of America where there is an inherent resistant to a state guaranteed healthcare model not the least from the medical fraternity itself for reasons that are not difficult to fathom. The US population by and large is averse to any system that would entail institution of waiting lists.
