National Health Policy 2017 aims to provide universal health coverage, quality healthcare at affordable cost
New Delhi: The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday approved the National Health Policy, 2017 (NHP 2017), which aims to provide universal health coverage and deliver quality healthcare services at affordable cost to all the people of the country.
Dr Surendra Mohan Tuli is a renowned orthopaedist with over four decades of experience. He is former director of the Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University (IMS BHU). Currently, he is practising as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Vidyasagar Institute of Mental Health, Neuro and Allied Sciences (VIMHANS) in New Delhi.
The honourable Finance Minister deserves applause for increasing the budget allocated for health by 27% to Rs 48,000 crore. However, though laudable, it is hardly adequate when we look at the healthcare needs of India.

The Medical Council of India (MCI) has issued a circular declaring the postgraduate diploma courses in HIV Medicine, Health Management, Maternal & Child Health and Geriatric Medicine offered by the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi as illegal.
The Indian Council of Medical Research, in a reply to a RTI application, has said: “The ICMR has not received any complaint from surrogates about their exploitation by doctors and others”.
