London: The Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust, a charitable foundation established in 2012 to mark and celebrate The Queen’s sixty-year contribution to the Commonwealth, has honoured the work of Dr Subhadra Jalali, a pioneering ophthalmologist who is “leading the way in preventing premature babies from going blind across India and beyond”.

Kerala smokers spend Rs 226 crore on heart ailments

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala smokers spend a staggering Rs 226 crore for treating cardiovascular diseases, said a study. The report is based on a one-year study on ‘Economic Burden of Tobacco Related Diseases in India’ conducted by the Public Health Foundation of India with support from the union ministry of health and family welfare, and the World Health Organization.

Dr Vikram Patel receives Institute of Medicine’s 2014 Sarnat Prize
