Gujarat Medical Council cancels registrations of five doctors for carrying out prenatal sex determination test
Ahmedabad: The Gujarat Medical Council (GMC) has temporarily cancelled the registrations of five doctors for allegedly carrying out prenatal sex determination test.
New Delhi: Delhi High Court has ruled that all places including vehicles where ultrasound machine or imaging machine or scanner or other equipment capable of determining sex of the foetus or has the potential of detection of sex during pregnancy or selection of sex before conception, require registration under the PCPNDT (Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques) Act.
As regards the question of whether or not to declare the sex of foetus is concerned, as doctors we first need to be clear what is it that we oppose. No responsible organisation, especially of doctors, will support sex selective abortions. It is the unjustified harassment for minor clerical errors which is the crux of our problems. If this is settled then let us examine whether our harassment will decrease following the reversal in policy from no sex determination to compulsory sex determination.
