UCMS: The cradle of healing, learning & research in health sciences

The University College of Medical Sciences (UCMS, Delhi has been ranked by India Today as India’s fifth Best Medical College for the year 2017. The top four medical colleges are All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi; Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune; Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore; and Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC), New Delhi.

MCI declares IGNOU’s medical courses as illegal | A new low in medical profession: Doctor tells junior to kill TB patient

The Medical Council of India (MCI) has issued a circular declaring the postgraduate diploma courses in HIV Medicine, Health Management, Maternal & Child Health and Geriatric Medicine offered by the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi as illegal.

Need for innovation in systems for effective healthcare delivery: Nadda

A different take on rural postings of doctors in India

Although it is very late to be sharing events of the previous year today, I consider that the correct timing of an article is also important for the proper reception and comprehension of their relevance. Especially in the coming days of huge change in the Indian medical school curriculum which is now to involve a one year rural posting, I thought sharing my work experiences in a quasi-rural quasi-urban environment would generate some ideas as to the nature of the challenges that students might face in the outside world we call “Bharat” (an euphemism for the less developed rural/semi-urban areas of India).

Thesis writing workshop at UCMS

New Delhi: Thesis writing is one of the neglected areas in medicine in India. Writing thesis in a proper format and following the protocols are the prerequisites of a good research presentation training of which, however, is not given due attention in most of the medical colleges.

Medicos’ dharna at Jantar Mantar draws overwhelming response

New Delhi: In an overwhelming response, hundreds of doctors and medical students on Thursday took part in a demonstration at Jantar Mantar here to protest against the recent amendment in the Postgraduate Medical Education Regulations of the Medical Council of India (MCI) which makes one year rural posting in a primary health centre (PHC) mandatory for becoming eligible to take admission in a PG course.

Low salary offered to young government doctors in Delhi raises concern in the fraternity

New Delhi: The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) recently issued an advertisement for the recruitment of permanent doctors at government hospitals in Delhi. While the medical fraternity welcomed the recruitment drive as a step ahead, especially since this had come after a gap of almost a decade, the low pay package offered by the government brought into question the whole objective of the recruitment process.

RIP: Orthopaedic surgeon Dr Balu Sankaran passes away at 85 in Chennai

Chennai: Dr Balu Sankaran (85), a noted orthopaedic surgeon best known for setting up the Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO), Kanpur in 1972, passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness here.

Dr V K Ramteke, Dr M S Chopra sent to judicial custody

New Delhi: Dr V K Ramteke (59), head of the surgery department at Maulana Azad Medical College and associate at Lok Nayak Hospital, and Dr Manmohan Singh Chopra (62), who retired from L N Hospital, were on Wednesday sent to 14-day judicial custody by Special Judge B R Kedia for allegedly purchasing medical equipment at exorbitant rates and causing a huge loss to the exchequer.
