The sombre darkness of Friday midnight saw a ray of hope as a few resident doctors in Maharashtra, who had been on strike since March 20th, decided to finally resume their duties. Now that the storm seems to be receding, it provides an opportunity for us to look back at how the entire situation transpired.

I must confess to some moral dilemmas when I commenced penning this article. Way back in 1977, I was myself spearheading a physicians’ strike in Kanpur when a morose Deputy Minister for Health by the name of Jageshwar presented himself at the Medical College Hospital along with a drunken colleague and suspended three doctors on the spot for no rhyme or reason.
Hippocratic oath is used liberally to quell any organized protest by qualified doctors in India. The latest example of this has been the order of the Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court, which requested junior doctors in Kanpur and Lucknow to rejoin duties failing which contempt proceedings would be initiated against them.

While watching the fourth episode of Satyamev Jayate, I was getting a feeling that Aamir Khan is touching a hornet’s nest. Sure enough. The protests started the same day. But it is not as I had expected. It is a much muted reaction from a few doctors, may be because the others are too busy in their practice. There have been some sane and mature voices also from some senior professionals who had the courage to accept the fact based criticism.
