Dr V Shanta gets Padma Vibhushan; Padma Bhushan for Dr D Nageshwar Reddy

New Delhi: Cancer specialist Dr Vishwanathan Shanta has been selected for Padma Vibhushan, India’s second highest civilian award after Bharat Ratna, while gastroenterologist Dr D Nageshwar Reddy has been named for Padma Bhushan, the country’s third highest civilian award. They are among the 112 notable personalities to get Padma awards in 2016.

Multiple sclerosis surgical ‘procedure’ triggers debate

A debate has started over the use of a relatively new surgical procedure as treatment for Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Based on Italian physician Dr Paolo Zamboni’s 2009 hypothesis that MS can be attributed to vascular reasons, some doctors argue that it should be treated the same way as in the case of blockages in the heart. Others point out that the long-term effects of such a surgery haven’t been established yet.
