Dr P Venugopal, who did the first successful heart transplant procedure in India in August 1994, has said private hospitals should stop making profit out of transplants. The cost of organ transplant varies between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 30 lakh for a heart transplant from one private hospital to another, although the organ is obtained for free and most transplant procedures do not require any imported material.
