Poet’s Note: Today is Guru Purnima, an auspicious day when we pay our respects to our teachers and to their teachings in all aspects of life. For a physician, he teaches everything — right from medicine as a subject, its ethics, core values of the profession and moral values in every day life. I am presenting herewith how my teachers have influences and shaped my career in Medicine. This inspirational poem mirrors the teachers of early 60s to late 80s.
Guru Purnima — A Teacher Remembers His Teachers
Guru Purnima day to pay obeisance to all my teachers,
Right from primary secondary and university days till date,
The lessons I learnt from my mother Rajni in utero infancy days,
Father’s Sanskrit lessons home and school ringing in ears till date.
There was Puri sir on day one Shukla sir Joshi sir Taneja sir Dube sir at Kali Charan College,
B N Tandon sir Dhawan sir in his seventies taught English despite bent spine infirmities,
Away from flashlights of school and college many who shaped my career by their inputs and blessings,
Sri Amritlal Nagar Hazari Prasad Dwivedi Raikrishna Das Vidyanivas Mishra Hindi humanities stream.
My IMS BHU teachers teacher par excellence master surgeon modern Sushruta Prof Udupa sir,
Evergreen always smiling polished with all that superb depth in clinical medicine Prof P N Somani sir,
Gentleman to the core suave simplistic and very practical down to earth Prof H S Bajpai sir,
Never to be forgotten humblest I have seen encyclopaedia of quotes dispensing Dr P K Srivastava sir.
Beyond boundaries of Internal Medicine whose fingers moved on spine like hands on piano Prof Tuli sir,
Prof Vaidya Prof N N Khanna Prof Dube all time great Prof P K Das Eye Prof Krishnaswamy Mehra sir,
They all made me what I am today despite all my follies and pit falls,
Let me do my best what I learnt from them all these years my prostrations to them!
