Kerala hospital fined Rs 25 lakh for giving wrong body for cremation

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has ordered Ernakulam Medical Centre to pay Rs 25 lakh as compensation to the family of Purushothaman, whose body was mistakenly handed over to another family for cremation.

Purushothaman, a retired district registrar in the state registration department, had died of a cardiac arrest on December 30, 2009, while undergoing treatment at the hospital.

The hospital claimed it was a mistake of the family of Lt Col A P Kanthy, who died on the same day as Purushothaman. According to the hospital, Kanthy family had wrongly identified the body. But evidence showed hospital staff had carelessly released Purushothaman’s body to Kanthy’s family, reports ToI.
