New Delhi: Dr Ashok Seth, chairman, Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, New Delhi, was honoured with Doctorate of Science by the Aligarh Muslim University at its 63rd Annual Convocation held on February 28.
This was Dr Seth’s 5th doctorate honour. He has earlier been recognised by Banaras Hindu University, Jamia Millia Islamia University, Amity University and Teerthanker Mahaveer University.
Dr Seth, who did his MBBS from Aligarh Muslim University in 1978, was earlier honoured by the university as its most outstanding alumni.
Dr Seth is the Head – Cardiology Council of Fortis Group of Hospitals. His contributions in the field of cardiology, especially interventional cardiology, have been recognised extensively across the world.
In the course of his career spanning more than 30 years, he has pioneered numerous angioplasty techniques, including Directional Atherectomy, Rotablator, Stents, Thrombectomy devices, Drug Eluting Stents, Impella heart support device failing heart, Bioabsorbable Stents and TAVI. He has performed one of the highest numbers of angiographies and angioplasties, which have been mentioned in the Limca Book of Records, according to a statement.
For his unique achievements and contributions, Dr Seth has been honoured with the Padma Bhushan (2015) and Padma Shri (2003) awarded by the President of India. He has also received the National Award of the Republic of Spain ‘Officer’s Cross Order of Isabella the Catholic’ in 2010, ‘Mason Sones Award’ from SCAI (Society for Cardiac Angiography and Interventions, US) in 2010.
On receiving the honour Dr Seth said in his speech: “It is one of the most touching and memorable moments of my life, if time could stand still I would ask it to do now… for it is a fortunate few who have this satisfaction and privilege to be recognized by their alma mater, their teachers, their peers and provide an inspiration to the students of the alma mater.”
