Two doctors suspended after use of cycle pump during sterilization surgery

Bhubaneswar: The state government on Tuesday suspended two doctors after a cycle pump was recently used to inflate abdomen of 58 women during sterilization surgery at a camp in Angul district.

Quoting Angul collector Sachin Ramachandra Jadhav, ToI reports that additional district medical officer (family welfare) Dr Shankar Lal Agarwal and Banarpal community health centre (CHC) in-charge Dr Deepak Patnaik have been suspended.

The government earlier removed the operating surgeon, Dr Mahesh Chandra Rout, from the panel of doctors formed to perform such surgeries.

According to reports, a cycle pump was used as a substitute for carbon dioxide insufflator at the sterilization camp at Banarpal CHC on November 28.

Dr Rout, who had retired from government service two years ago, told the media that he was not alone and surgeons often use bicycle pump in the rural camps where the facility of an operation theatre and other sophisticated equipment are not available.
