The Mother and Child Tracking System (MCTS) initiative was launched under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) in December 2009.

While earlier a call centre operated from the ministry premises, the new Facilitation Centre is expected to reach out to a much larger number of pregnant and feeding mothers through the larger infrastructure.

MCTS is a name based online service that captures the details of pregnant women and children up to five years and tracks delivery of due services to them. Over 10.5 crore pregnant women and children have been registered in MCTS till now, according to a statement by the health ministry.

The aim of MCTS is to ensure that every pregnant woman gets complete and quality ante and post natal care and every child receives a full range of immunisation services.

Azad said the tracking system would help gather valuable data from states on the health schemes and facilities reaching the beneficiaries. This will help to better the facilities and also evaluate them, he added.

A great step forward and only one of of its kind much desired for neglected suppressed Indian women.
It will be worthwhile to add a tracking system with disease profile of the mother at the same time. That can be done through a questionnaire that should included communicable as well as non communicable disease including queries on cancer found in females :cervical, breast , ovarian, gall bladder and oesophageal.

Good lot of patients are received by us with lactating carcinoma of breast or cancer of uterine cervix with pregnancy. There are separate chapters in our textbooks and articles in high profile oncological journals to deal with this challenge!!!!

So far not much of effort has been done to track cancers in rural women in interior areas , while they remain the victim of late stage presentation and hence incurability .

I think 11th March, the International Gynec Cancer DAy ( well within International Women’s week) is the right day for declaration of addition of this facility by the Honourable Health Minister

What shall be the future of the child if mother suffers from cancer during child’s upbringing or mother dies due to incurable late stage cancer when child needs utmost care.

This is the reality and Honourable Health Minister must plan this Mother and Child Tracking FAcility in light of cancer free health of the mother as well as early detection of child hood cancer that either manifest within one year of child birth or the cancers that are known to have its inception while child is in utero.
