PGIMER conducts its first heart transplant surgery

Chandigarh: A team of doctors led by Dr T Shyam Singh, head, cardiovascular surgery, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh on Sunday conducted PGI’s first ever heart transplant surgery. The operation lasted over eight hours.

The family of Hoshiarpur resident Kashmira Singh, who was declared brain-dead (a condition where the brain stops functioning but the heart pumps blood) following an accident, donated his heart, two kidneys and two corneas, according to an official from the union ministry of health and family welfare.

Even after conducting PGI’s first ever heart transplant surgery, the doctors have not yet gone into a celebration mode. They are rather keeping a close watch on the medical condition of the 55-year-old recipient of the heart, who is currently recuperating in an intensive care unit (ICU) of the institute.

All these feats are possible only in central government medical institutes where enough number of faculty are appointed, encouragement for research and little political interference.I wish the team which conducted heart transplantation all success in future and speedy recovery for the patient.
