Cardiologist arrested for taking bribe from stent supplier

Hyderabad: Dr D Seshagiri Rao, head, department of cardiology, Nizam’s Institute of Medicine (NIMS), has been caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 1.6 lakh from a stent supplier.

Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) sleuths recovered the tainted amount from Dr Rao’s office and arrested him on Monday. A case was registered against him under the Prevention of Corruption (PC) Act.

Dr Rao had allegedly demanded Rs 1.6 lakh bribe from Atmacharan Reddy, who runs a stent and pacemaker distribution company (Charan Medical & Cardiac Devices Pvt Ltd) for doing an official favour.

Reddy, a former Member of Parliament (MP) from Nizamabad, approached ACB sleuths with a complaint against the cardiologist. The ACB sleuths booked a case under the PC Act against Dr Rao and laid a trap to nab him. [Source: ToI]

Offering free trips to foreign countries and money to the cardilogists is happening in many hospitals of Delhi,Hyderabad etc in return for using their stents by most of the manufacturing companies. It is very difficult to understand the way the money was given and the cardiologist was trapped. The complainant has to prove that the money given to the cardiologist was a bribe and not for other reason. If somebody wants to get rid of a doctor,he can just place the money on his table or give it to him for any other reason and may call ACB and give statement that the doctor demanded the money for favour. Impartial enquiry alone will find the truth.
