West Bengal to set up 10 specialized mother and child care hospitals

Thursday, July 26, 2012

Kolkata: The state government has decided to set up ten specialized mother and child care hospitals over the next three years. These hospitals will be set up in Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, Malda, Murshidabad, Birbhum, Howrah, Bankura, Purulia, Nadia and Burdwan.

Each of the ten hospitals will be set up at a cost of Rs 16 crore. Funds have already been sanctioned and will be released over the next three years. The construction work is expected to begin in 4-5 months.

Once functional, the hospitals will help to curb the flow of critical infant cases into child care hospitals in Kolkata that are often forced to operate beyond capacity. Infant mortality in West Bengal now stands at 31 per thousand. Around 264 mothers die per 10,000 live births. [Source: ToI]
