Doctors in Lucknow caught on MMS demanding bribe

Lucknow: Some doctors at the Balrampur Hospital here have been caught on MMS demanding bribe for admitting patients in the emergency ward, an official said on Saturday.

Made by a group of Lucknow residents, the MMS along with a complaint has been sent to Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, Health Minister Ahmad Hasan and Principal Secretary (Health) Sanjay Agarwal.

A health official told IANS that certain malpractices in the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Hospital and the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital were also caught on video and had been appended with the complaint.

Informed sources said that director of the Balrampur Hospital, Dr T P Singh, had launched a probe after watching the MMS.

The group has also filmed some illegal activities in the orthopaedic department, burn unit and surgery department.

One of the medical officers appearing in the MMS was probed twice on corruption charges during the previous Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) regime but was let off, an official said.

The chief minister’s office could not confirm the receipt of the MMS or the complaint but said the government would take it seriously if the issue were brought to its notice. [Source: IANS]

There is no excuse for acts like this. But if you have to spend lot of money to get into medical schools,donation/bribes etc,you have to recoup that somehow. And then there is the bribes doctors pay to get employment. That aside, there is no justification to ask patients to pay to get admitted to the hospitals.

Any frustrated and dissatisfied doctor is potentially corrupt.Who is responsible for high level of corruption in the government run hospitals. The doctors in India are underpaid and made to work more in the hospitals run by the state government. In case of Bihar, the doctor jobs are sold and to remain in a place without transfer, doctor has to bribe heavily to politician in power.Anybody who did not get job on merit will naturally be angry with system. The funny system in India is that an auto driver or labourer who spends hundreds of rupees on liquor, movies will never accept that he need to pay for his health problem to the doctor.Once forced to spend some money,he will keep on spreading the message that doctor had charged him more or wrote unnecessary tests or drugs. This type of public attitude towards doctors has become very frequent. When you pay very less for the service of a superspecialist,he will try to get money from other means. No state government pays decent salary or empowers doctors like revenue officials or IAS officers as doctors are not politically important for them. The corruption in medical profession stands low compared to that in political system, revenue department or judiciary. But there are no public shows by any cine artist. Qualification wise doctors earn far less money that a painter or tailor or labourer. State government is exploiting the doctors by giving low salary and indirectly responsible for corruption among them. Doctors have no public sympathy and once they gang up and raise the consultation fees to Rs 1000/- instead of Rs 100/- where the public will go.Will they strike against them or force government to start more hospitals. If you want quality services the public has to pay well otherwise government hospitals are the best places for free treatment. If anybody demands money, they should complain to higher authorities.

APPLY SECURITY TAGS WITH DOCTORS INVOLVED IN CORRUPTION,MALPRACTICE,AND UNETHICAL PRACTICE.

It has become routine to hearing news about people in the noble profession are getting involved in all sorts of unethical work and corruptive practice, thus tarnishing the image of the entire medical fraternity. The society has been looking down upon the medical fraternity as a greedy, insensitive, unscrupulous, uncompassionate, bunch of people working like a mafia group. Why should the profession tarnish its image due to the presence of some black sheep who are having their selfish motives and have no consideration for the medical fraternity as a whole, besides not performing their duties with honesty, dignity and respect ?

The law of the land is not so harsh to cancell the license of such people to practice medicine. It is therefore necessary to tag these people with some security device like the one the USA homeland security used with certain Indian students who had entered that country manipulating visa rules.

If necessary Government of India could procure enough number of such tags from USA and ask the state authorities to apply them over anybody found to be involved in any kind of corruptive practice defying the law. Somebody might argue about human right violation with such punishments. But in the larger interest of the public and medical fraternity some difficult decisions have to be taken. The security tag might help in monitoring the activities of these professionals.

The authorities at the centre are expected to control the menace in the profession by some means or other. Its the people who have been suffering a lot for inaction by the government.
