According to Dr Yogesh Chawla, his priority would be to give a fillip to organ transplantation and improve emergency care at the hospital. “If all goes well, the PGI would soon go in for heart transplants,” Dr Chawla has said.

A recipient of Dr B C Roy Medical Council of India Silver Jubilee Research Award in 1999 for research in hepatology, Dr Yogesh Chawla joined PGIMER as a lecturer in 1983 and went on to head its hepatology department in 1999.

Dr Chawla took charge of his new responsibilities on October 7. His predecessor Dr K K Talwar demitted office on April 30. In the interim, Dr Vinay Sakhuja, head of the nephrology department, held officiating charge as PGIMER director for over five months. [Source: Tribune, Indian Express]

Update: Dr Chawla’s appointment challenged before Delhi CAT

Dr Digambar Behera, professor, department of pulmonary medicine, PGIMER and one of the shortlisted candidates for the PGIMER director’s post, has filed a petition before Delhi Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) alleging that the selection procedure adopted to appoint Dr Y K Chawla as the institute’s new director was “vitiated”.

“My petition is not against Dr Chawla or any individual. I want to bring out in the open the violations in rules that have been done during the selection procedure and also the deviations from the PGI Act, which is an act of Parliament, that were made in the process,” Dr Digambar Behera, currently on deputation as Director of LRS Institute of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases, Delhi has said.

The Delhi Tribunal has asked the union health and family welfare and personnel and training secretaries to respond to the accusations. The Selection Committee too has been asked to reply to the allegations. [Source: Indian Express]

Recent appointments of directors of some of the central medical institutes in Delhi were also unsexpected. Now one more controversy has been raised over the selection of director of PGMER .All these are probably a pointer to bias and favouritism at highest level. If the petition of dr D.Behera is upheld, the image of central health ministry will pluge to low level.
