Dr Umesh Londhe, who heads Gopika Clinic in Naupada and Dr V N Jawahar, who owns New Ultrasound Sonography Centre at Pokhran Road II in Thane have been caught on tape by NGO Lek Ladki for conducting a prenatal gender identification test on a five-month pregnant woman, who was a decoy.
The Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act (PCPNDT Act) bans sex determination and imposes a fine of up to Rs 50,000 and three years’ rigorous imprisonment for doctors who break the law.
Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) plans to move court with all the evidence against radiologist Dr V N Jawahar and gynaecologist Dr Umesh Londhe, who offered to perform an abortion for Rs 70,000 for the decoy patient. The abortion clinic and the sonography centre have already been sealed.
Indian Radiological and Imaging Association (IRIA) intends to suspend Dr V N Jawahar. “We have already written to our state association seeking Dr Jawahar’s suspension. We will also send a complaint to the Maharashtra Medical Council to carry out appropriate action,” Dr Jignesh Thakker, secretary general, IRIA, has said.
Incidentally, Dr Jignesh Thakker signed the documents as a witness during the raid on Dr V N Jawahar’s clinic in Thane. “What more proof can there be about our association’s support for the PCPNDT Act? For the 1 per cent black sheep in our community, the government cannot penalize all doctors,” Dr Thakker has added.
