Ayush doctors may be allowed to prescribe medicines for terminating pregnancy

New Delhi: The union health ministry is expected to soon present before the Cabinet the revised draft Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Amendment Bill that would seek to enable Ayush doctors to conduct non-invasive procedures on women for terminating pregnancy. The move is aimed at increasing access to safe abortion by expanding the number of healthcare providers.

Do we really need more doctors or do we not?

Our policy makers are confused. Either we have need for more doctors or we do not. When we want to prove need we quote figure that India has 1 doctor for 1700 population conveniently glossing over the fact that these are figures for MBBS doctors only. If Ayush (Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy) are not doctors why promote Ayush at all.
