Indian Medical Education — A Story of Negligence and Decline

It is high time that India conducts a ‘Flexner reform’ of its own. Research and innovation should be encouraged at student level along with the incorporation of modern teaching and training methodology and tools. The government also needs to crack down on medical colleges working without an infrastructure and either shut them down or revamp them with modern standards. Medical education should transition from singular rote learning to a more holistic approach that can benefit the nation in long run.

Deaths that will not count

Now that the stent prices have been capped, there is an “artificial shortage” of stents in the market leading to delays in conducting angioplasties. Government, of course, has responded with threats of strict action against hoarders and profiteers who cause an artificial scarcity.

PGI Chandigarh invites applications to recruit 79 faculty members

Chandigarh: The Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) has invited applications for the recruitment of 79 faculty members, including 30 professors, one additional professor, one associate professor and 47 assistant professors in various departments. The last date for submission of application is February 28.

PGI Chandigarh directed to pay Rs 10 lakh for its doctors’ negligence

New Delhi: The Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh has been directed by the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) to pay a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family of a patient, Jaswinder Kumar (now deceased), for the amputation of his leg due to alleged medical negligence and improper diagnosis by its doctors.

Health ministry directs PGI to issue warning to Dr A K Gupta

Chandigarh: The union health ministry has directed the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) to issue a “warning” to its Medical Superintendent Dr Anil Kumar Gupta for “disobeyed the ministry orders” and taking leave without permission.
