New Delhi: The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is planning to test the efficacy of two medicines — Metformin and Bedaquiline Delaminate — for tackling the drug-resistant tuberculosis.
With 10 percent of 3.63 trillion medicines popped worldwide in 2015, India is the world’s third-largest medicine market. It stands to scientific reason that these drugs will have side effects.
New York: Researchers are likely to have uncovered a novel mechanism behind the ability of the common diabetes drug — metformin — to inhibit the progression of pancreatic cancer.
Washington: Long-term treatment with the type 2 diabetes drug metformin improves health and longevity of male mice when started at middle age, reports an international team of scientists led by researchers at the National Institute on Aging (NIA), part of the National Institutes of Health.
Washington: The US Food and Drug administration is cracking down on the sale of alternative remedies, including ayurvedic and homeopathic products and dietary supplements, for the treatment of diabetes.
Washington: Diabetic patients with ovarian cancer who took the drug metformin for their diabetes had a better survival rate than patients who did not take it, a study headed by Mayo Clinic shows. The findings, published in the journal Cancer, may play an important role for researchers as they study the use of existing medications to treat different or new diseases.
Washington: A popular class of diabetes drugs increases patients’ risk of bladder cancer, according to a new study published online this month in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
Washington: The University of Texas Medical Branch researchers have discovered that a drug already prescribed to millions of people with diabetes could also have another important use: treating one of the world’s leading causes of blindness.
Washington: Metformin, a drug widely used to treat Type II diabetes, may help to prevent primary liver cancer, researchers at the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Centre report in the Cancer Prevention Research. Primary liver cancer, or hepatocellular carcinoma, is an often-deadly form of cancer that is on the rise worldwide and is the fastest-growing cause of cancer-related deaths among American men.
Ottawa: In a paper published in the journal Cancer Prevention Research, researchers from McGill University and the University of Montreal have reported that exposure to metformin, a drug commonly prescribed to patients with Type II diabetes, reduces the cellular mutation rate and the accumulation of DNA damage. It is well known that such mutations are directly involved in carcinogenesis, but lowering cancer risk by inhibiting the mutation rate has never been shown to be feasible, according to the researchers.
