Common diabetes drug may treat ovarian cancer

Washington: Diabetic patients with ovarian cancer who took the drug metformin for their diabetes had a better survival rate than patients who did not take it, a study headed by Mayo Clinic shows. The findings, published in the journal Cancer, may play an important role for researchers as they study the use of existing medications to treat different or new diseases.

Commonly used diabetes drug may help prevent primary liver cancer

Washington: Metformin, a drug widely used to treat Type II diabetes, may help to prevent primary liver cancer, researchers at the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Centre report in the Cancer Prevention Research. Primary liver cancer, or hepatocellular carcinoma, is an often-deadly form of cancer that is on the rise worldwide and is the fastest-growing cause of cancer-related deaths among American men.

Research opens new avenues in cancer prevention

Ottawa: In a paper published in the journal Cancer Prevention Research, researchers from McGill University and the University of Montreal have reported that exposure to metformin, a drug commonly prescribed to patients with Type II diabetes, reduces the cellular mutation rate and the accumulation of DNA damage. It is well known that such mutations are directly involved in carcinogenesis, but lowering cancer risk by inhibiting the mutation rate has never been shown to be feasible, according to the researchers.
