Chennai: Corneal diseases are supposed to be the 4th most important cause for blindness worldwide after cataract, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration. Corneal transplantation served as the golden procedure that restored the visual function when the visual impairment caused by corneal diseases became too severe.
Dr Mariappan’s lab is involved in basic and translational research towards addressing the problems of retinal and corneal diseases using different sources of adult and pluripotent stem cells.
“When you have lots of information, there is a pattern that is evident in that data and that pattern might not be easily understood by the human mind because there is only a limit to which we can process information. So, what we are aiming to do is analyse the huge amount of data that is available here.”
