The Vizag Case Exposes More Gaps in Surrogacy Bill

Following the recent Vizag IVF Centre case, the Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill 2016 may need reconsideration towards integrating legal safeguards. The case in hand brings forth a series of grave biomedical and ethical issues as lack of comprehensive physical and psycho-social counselling to all the stakeholders involved in surrogacy namely surrogate mother, intending mother father, egg donor before the initiation of surrogacy under the Surrogacy Bill.

Hospital fined Rs 7 lakh for not taking consent before inserting catheter in a patient

New Delhi: The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) has held Sitaram Bhartia Institute of Science and Research guilty of negligence for not taking consent before inserting a catheter for central venous line procedure in a patient and directed the Delhi-based hospital to pay a compensation of Rs 7 lakh to him.

Study shows patients prefer iPads to doctors when discussing surgery

London: Often patients undergo procedures without real informed consent being achieved due to technical language, jargon and time pressure, with up to half of patients finding it difficult to understand what their doctor tells them. Now a group of Australian doctors has prepared patients for surgery using iPads, and found that patients’ understanding was much better than after a face-to-face consultation.

Woman’s limbs amputated at Delhi hospital

New Delhi: In a rare incident, both hands and feet of a 44-year-old woman were amputated by the surgeons of a city-based private hospital allegedly without informing the patient’s kin, a charge stoutly denied by the hospital.

Will the doctor fraternity recommend illegal transplantation surgeries?

In response to ‘A letter from Dr R Sreedhara to Aamir Khan’, Major (Retired) Pankaj Rai has written a rejoinder in which he has tried to present his version of the story involving the death of his wife Seema Rai who expired on May 6, 2010 after kidney-pancreas transplant surgery at Fortis Hospital, Bangalore. The incident was featured in the fourth episode, ‘Every Life is Precious’, of the TV programme Satyamev Jayate aired on May 27, 2012.
