FDA-approved drug restores hair in patients with Alopecia Areata

New York: Researchers at Columbia University Medical Centre (CUMC) have identified the immune cells responsible for destroying hair follicles in people with alopecia areata, a common autoimmune disease that causes hair loss, and have tested an FDA-approved drug that eliminated these immune cells and restored hair growth in a small number of patients. The results appear in Nature Medicine.

Timing of cancer radiation therapy may minimize hair loss, researchers say

Washington: Discovering that mouse hair has a circadian clock — a 24-hour cycle of growth followed by restorative repair — researchers suspect that hair loss in humans from toxic cancer radiotherapy and chemotherapy might be minimized if these treatments are given late in the day.

Drug used to treat glaucoma actually grows human hair: Study

Washington: A new research report appearing in The FASEB (Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology) Journal shows how the FDA-approved glaucoma drug, bimatoprost, causes human hair to regrow. It’s been commercially available as a way to lengthen eyelashes, but these data are the first to show that it can actually grow human hair from the scalp.
