Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University renamed as King George Medical University

Thursday, July 26, 2012

Lucknow: The Akhilesh Yadav government on Monday restored the original name of the 100-year-old King George Medical College (KGMC), which had been upgraded to a university and renamed Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University (CSMMU) by the Mayawati government in 2007.

“The image of the premier medical institution was affected by its name change to Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University and there had been requests to revert to its old name only. It may be recalled that through successive amendments it was named CSJMU. The cabinet today restored its old name,” the state government on Monday said.

The institute’s name was first changed to CSMMU in 2002 by the Mayawati government. But in 2003, when Akhilesh’s father Mulayam Singh Yadav took over as chief minister, the original name was restored. After Mayawati returned to power, her government again changed its name to CSMMU in May 2007.

Both times, students and teachers of the college had resisted the move saying they would lose their identity as “Georgians”. The Mayawati government had said the name King George Medical College smacked of colonial vestiges and needed to be adjusted to the contemporary realities in India and, hence, should be renamed after Shahuji Maharaj, a Dalit icon.
